It is our earnest appeal to all visitors and pilgrims to keep the sacred lake and the holy trail clean. Please keep your empty containers, bottles, polythene bags, used batteries, and any worn out items that you have no use for, until you can find the next recycling point to off load these items. It is a matter of shame for humanity that the most revered place on the planet has been polluted. The trail to Mount Kailash, and public access beaches of the sacred lake Mansarovar have been littered with plastic, empty polythene bags, dry cell batteries, bottles, soda cans, fruit juice tetra-packs, and what nots. Even the rivers and streams running into the sacred lake are lined with all sorts of trash. So much so that the water from sacred lake reveals suspended impurities. If we undertake the pilgrimage of a lifetime, in an endeavor to attain Moksha, the very least service we must do to the Divine is to keep the sacred places clean, green, and serene. Each one of us can own up some moral responsibility to leave any place cleaner than what it was when we arrived there. That would mean some picking of the trash left behind by others, and a strict discipline imposed on ourselves to refrain from leaving behind anything that we brought with us except the prayers. SFUO has launched a project to clean up the holy trail around Mount Kailash, and the scared lake Mansarovar. Located in Tibet, China, at altitudes of 19,000 feet and 16,000 feet respectively, access to the Trail and Mansarovar is limited from May through September and the roads are incomplete. SFUO is making arrangements to seek permission from the appropriate government channels in Tibet, China, Nepal, and India to launch this clean up project. In a phased manner, SFUO plans to: 1. Educate the pilgrims and locals alike about the end result of their action so that they can refrain from polluting. This involves awareness building through various media channels and making request to the pilgrims in collaboration with various tour organizers. 2. Place sign boards at strategic points across the trail and public access beaches to Mansarovar, requesting pilgrims and locals to keep these places clean. These sign boards will be multi-lingual, depicting the request in Tibetan, Chinese, English, and Hindi. 3. Request the Chinese and Tibetan governments to impose restrictions on carrying polythene and plastic bottles etc. to Kailash Mansarovar, impose fines on polluting, and distribute leaflets to all visitors through police check points that currently verify the driving licenses. 4. Organize to pick up existing trash by hiring local labor, yaks, horses etc. and remove these to appropriate recycling or disposal points. 5. Collect samples of water and soil from various spots during various phases of this clean up project to study and analyze the impact and effectiveness of clean up efforts. 6. Raise funds for the clean up project, and subsequently for the establishment of an ‘International Institute of Integrated Health and Healing’ (IIIHH) at an appropriate site in the vicinity of Kailsah Mansarovar area. This institute will focus on integrating various traditional healing techniques from diverse cultures with contemporary medicine and surgery to invent newer life systems. Besides being a research platform, it would also fulfill the long pending need of providing a medical care facility right at the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage site. SFUO website www.sfuo.org would be updated with special sections for these projects. 7. Honor, and recognize the efforts of all those who contribute towards the success of this clean up project and establishment of IIIHH by appreciation and awards. You can certainly make a difference.
